Alexandro Jodorowsky created El Topo as his own approach to the old western flick. The end result was essentially one of the strangest, most beautiful and most violent westerns ever made. The movie follows El Topo, a black hat gunfighter who goes out with his young son to avenge the death of the mother. As the movie opens, El Topo has his son bury a picture of the mother, symbolically saying goodbye to his childhood and becoming a man. The two travel across the desert on horseback in search of vengeance.
After attaining revenge, the two go their separate ways. El Topo leaves the boy in the hands of the church while leaving with his new lover. His girlfriend insists that he trek through the desert and kill the top four killers, and only then will she be able to love him, as she can only love the strongest men. The two wander the desert for several years, taking out the killers one by one.
Each of the four killers is a fascinating character. One is attended to by a pair of handicapped people. One with no legs, who sits on the shoulders of one with no arms. Another of the killers is an old man who deflects bullets with a butterfly net, while another is a strong man who is capable of building incredibly delicate, ornate objects out of toothpicks.
After being betrayed by his lover, El Topo goes into a coma for several years, sleeping in the heart of a mountain, a cocoon of sorts, as he will eventually be reborn as a savior. He dons a priestly robe and shaves his head and attempts to redeem himself, but must first find the same forgiveness in his heart that he seeks from the world.
Topo eventually reunites with his adult son, and learns that putting him in the church's hands did not, in fact, spare him a life of difficulties, and that challenges and violence will hound you no matter who you are or what your background.
The movie touches on so many pieces of symbolism from so many religions that the end result is a bizarre, sort of Andy Warhol-esque mish mash of religions that becomes its own, unique entity. Nobody but the director can pick up on every piece of symbolism in the film, so it's best to simply enjoy it for what it is.
El Topo carries an incredibly surreal, eerie feeling. It will shock you, enlighten you, entertain you, educate you and repulse you. It's a story about love and hate, revenge and redemption, and while the trailer may have been taking it a bit far when it declared that the movie will be the single greatest experience you ever have in your life, the fact remains that it's a darn great film.
