Why is it harder to do well in speaking/listening than reading/writing and there are iilliterate people?
There are people who only know one language but can only speak/listen but can't read/write.
But when people are learning a new language they do well in reading and writing but it's harder to speak and listen.
I wonder why? And which is harder, speaking/listening or reading/writing.
I can only answer from personal experience. I am multilingual due to the fact that I grew up in a country rich in diverse races and languages. My mother tongue is English and the national language is Malay. We have to learn to read and write both in school. But I also speak Portuguese as my ancestors are descendants from 16th century Portuguese sea merchants.
Interestingly, as the Portuguese I speak today is an "old" language and passed down from generation to generation a lot of us within the family can only speak it but not read or write it. I suppose it was never deemed an important enough language to pass on in that way as we could never use it outside of our Eurasian race. Then there is also the factor that many women in the past were never sent to school or had higher education past primary school.
It is true that people who can pick up another language easier are the ones who were multilingual as a child. A young brain can learn to accept different languages as it is and not question why the sentence structure is different. My sister speaks to her three young boys in English and Portuguese at home and they are learning Arabic in school since it is a prerequisite in Dubai.
I took up Welsh whilst I lived in Wales and I excelled at it over the other English speaking only students due to the fact that I learnt it differently than them. My tutor told us that to learn another language you firstly had to forget all that you know about English - ie. how the English sentences are constructed and pronounced. Welsh sentences do not have the same structure and the more you try to compare the two or try to string up the sentence first in English then converting it into Welsh, will confuse you to no end. Your brain will not let go all that is 'normal' to you and you will end up being so frustrated. Then there is the pronunciation too. (ex: The number 5 in Welsh is spelt 'pump' but pronounced 'pimp'. A lot of the students kept saying 'pump' all the time.) As a lot of the Welsh vowels and pronunciations are similar to Malay I could of course get my tongue around it quicker. As everyone knows, Welsh is a very throaty and rolling of your "R's" language.
Children learn languages in this same way. They learn everything as it is. Even when a toddler first learns to speak English they never question why a table is called a table? So therefore it is easier to learn to speak a language as it is all parroting anyway (as a child does) than it is to write it. When you get into a language properly as I did with Welsh, only then, are you taught the proper structure. By being able to write well you have then mastered the language.
When I went to Japan last year, I took a basic crash course in Japanese just to get by and because I could speak it relatively passable the Japanese thought that I could really speak it they proceeded to speak to me in Japanese. Which of course led to me sheepishly confessing in Japanese:
"Wakarimasen" (I do not understand)
or "Nihongo ga dekimasen" (I cannot speak Japanese)
