Is my daughter to young for a Leapster?
My daughter has just turned 3, and at a Thanksgiving get together she was paying very close attention to a cousin who had one (the cousin is 4). She never asked to play with it, but she sat down next to the cousin and watched intently. I'm wondering if all the games would require her to use the buttons or if there's one that would be very simple and only require the use of the touch screen. She's very into Dora the Explorer right now. I've also been told by more than one kindergarten teacher that she is advanced for her age and it would be fine, but I don't want to push something onto her she may not be ready for. Thanks!
I'm sure she could find some sort of way to play with it at her skill set.
For what it's worth, my 2 1/2 year old has a full functioning computer. He needed a couple of days to figure out the hand-eye coordination to control the mouse well, but he can easily navigate on-line photo galleries, pick and choose what videos on youtube he wants to watch, and play an array of educational games. He knows how to use a few keys on the keyboard (escape, enter, both shift keys, and the number keys though he doesn't quite know his numbers yet), but he hasn't had much need to use the keyboard yet.
I just looked at the Leapster and it looks like it leaves very little room for imaginative play. It looks like one of those things where she'd have to do it properly or not at all, which may not be appropriate for a 3 year old. If you think that it's something she can play with and get good valuable play from even if she can't play the games properly, it probably would be fine. I'm sure that with some guidance from you, she'd learn easily how to use the arrow keys and the A and B buttons to do different things. It still looks very video-gameish rather than educational, though.
