My 4-year old son is having difficulty learning the alphabet. Any help would be appreciated?
I find that many of the children his age are better familiarized with the alphabet. My son knows the song, but its obvious that he doesn't understand the concept of letters. I bought him a Leapfrog Fridge phonics and we try and put the letters in order, but he just seems to be hit and miss. Guessing. Even when we do his homework, the same. We read books but his attention is never on the the words but the pictures, Its kind of frustrating, and I don't want to turn him off of learning. I have also tried learning Computer Games, but it seems he just guesses then too. Even when it seems like he finaly gets it.. he can't repeat it. The same is for numbers. Should I be concerned. His teachers are not at this point. But I just can't help it. Any practical exercises you can suggest to give his apprehension a little boost, I would be most grateful for. Thank you.
Have you considered hanging a poster of the alphabet in his room? It would be something he could look at (be sure to hang it at his level). Then he could look at it and point to the letters while you and he sing the alphabet song. Then you could say,ok point to the A, etc. Then when he gets good do the same thing out of order, like S then B, etc. You could make up other games using letters and the poster to help him learn, be creative. One idea, write each letter on a different piece of paper and put them in different places throughout the house, on his poster point to the A, and then have him go find it, and on with the rest if it. If you don't want to buy a poster, you could get a poster board and some stencils at the store, draw it up, and let him color it, then he gets introduced to the ABC's even more. You could make cookies of the alphabet. You could put a different letter on the fridge or where ever each day, going through the alphapet, and do an activity with that letter. They also have Alphabet coloring books, Flash Cards you could use for this. Good Luck
